Germany promises Georgia support for EU candidate status

The war in Ukraine is being watched very carefully in Georgia. In 2008, Russian forces took control of two breakaway regions, South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Georgia has swung between governments who want to join the EU and NATO, and those who are much more friendly towards Russia. Yet polls suggest the vast majority of its people are more west-oriented. The division between the people and the current government makes Georgia seem unstable, making German foreign minister Annalena Baebock’s visit a sensitive one.
