Portugal’s President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa re-elected, as health system collapses over Covid-19

In Portugal, incumbent president Marcelo Rebelo de Souza has been re-elected in a presidential poll marked by 60% of abstention rate. The centre-right politician brought in over 60% of the vote in that socially-distant vote, with his socialist challenger coming in second, with little over 12%. In his victory speech, he vowed to make the fight against Covid-19 his top priority and also to reach out to the other side: “the public’s renewed confidence is anything but a blank cheque”, he said.
