To cut carbon emissions in the transport sector, new EU legislation will see petrol and diesel cars phased out on EU roads. This will be achieved through a de facto ban on the sale of new fossil-fuel powered passenger vehicles from 2035. However, a last minute intervention by Germany means that we haven’t seen the end of combustion engine cars. The automotive powerhouse ensured that in addition to electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles, consumers will be able to buy cars and vans running on “e-fuels” after the 2035 cut off date.
