The internet has added a new facet to the art of 21st century war. Hybrid warfare involving cyber attacks, trolling and social media disinformation has proved an effective way of galvanizing support and even tipping the public mood. A group of Ukrainian hackers have been launching cyber assaults on Russian websites since the 2014 annexation of Crimea – but they’re not the only ones using these methods to shape events on the ground.
