Climate diplomacy: EU, Canada and China co-convene the 6th Ministerial on Climate Action (MoCA)
Today and tomorrow, Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans, Canada’s Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Steven Guilbeault, and China’s Minister for Ecology and Environment, Huang Runqiu are co-convening the 6th session of the Ministerial on Climate Action (MoCA). The annual meeting, hosted this year by Canada, is being held in person in Stockholm, Sweden, after two years of virtual MoCA sessions due to COVID-19. Taking place a few days ahead of the Bonn Climate Change Conference, the MoCA is the first major ministerial meeting of the year on international climate action and will therefore provide political steer for those technical negotiations and an important stepping stone towards COP27 in November. Discussions will focus on key political issues on the COP27 agenda, including climate change mitigation, adaptation, loss and damage, climate finance, and how we can deliver on the Glasgow mandates and collectively respond to the demands for global climate ambition. Marking the 30thanniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), participants who include Ministers from G20 countries and other key parties in the UN climate negotiations will also discuss lessons learned from the previous 30 years of multilateral action on climate change, and the challenges looking ahead at the next 30 years in the UNFCCC.
