Commissioner Urpilainen travels to Mauritania to participate in the G5 Sahel Summit
Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jutta Urpilainen, travels to Mauritania on the 24th and 25th February to participate in the G5 Sahel Summit and the first General Assembly of the Sahel Alliance in Nouakchott, which takes place on Tuesday. Her participation highlights the EU’s commitment towards G5 Sahel countries to support the region towards stabilization and recovery. Ahead of the visit, the Commissioner stated : “We stand together against the huge challenges for the stability of the Sahel and beyond. We are resolutely working to build stronger action to ensure peace and development for the population of the Sahel region”. Atthe G5 Sahel Heads of State Summit, she will inaugurate the handing over ceremony of seven armoured vehicles to the Mauritanian battalion of the G5 Sahel Joint Force. In total, the EU has delivered 46 armoured vehicles and mobilised €253.6 million for the G5 Sahel Joint Force. The EU and its Member States are the biggest provider of development cooperation to the region with €8 billion between 2014-2020. In crisis areas, the EU has delivered basic social services directly to 200 000 people, created 10 000 jobs and supported 90 000 people to develop income-generating activities.
