COP 25: EU Energy Day
Tomorrow, Commissioner Simson will open the EU Energy Day at the COP25, on ‘Transforming the energy system for a climate neutral economy: the EU example’. Commissioner Simson said: “The top priority of this Commission is to deliver the European Green Deal and to embrace the paradigm shift necessary to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. The production and use of energy across economic sectors account for more than 75% of the EU’s greenhouse gas emissions. The decarbonisation of the energy system is therefore absolutely crucial to reach our objectives. We have to continue to promote energy efficiency, and invest in a power sector that is based largely on renewable sources, while at the same time putting the consumer at the heart of the energy system and ensuring secure and affordable energy supply for all Europeans.” Alongside Commissioner Simson, the Energy Minister of Chile Juan Carlos Jobet, Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC Patricia Espinosa, Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Francesco La Camera, and Member of the European Parliament Maria Spyraki will give keynote addresses. Also on EU Energy Day, Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans will assume co-chairmanship of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, in presence of the President of the EIB Werner Hoyer, and Michael R. Bloomberg. The Energy Day will showcase the EU’s leading contribution to accelerating the clean energy transition. International stakeholders will discuss opportunities and challenges linked to the transformation of the energy system and identify shared values and avenues for international cooperation activities.
