COVID-19: urgent measures adopted in Hungary and the risk for democracy
MEPs will assess on Thursday at 9.00 the Hungarian emergency measures against COVID-19 and the subsequent risks for democracy, rule of law and fundamental rights.
Commission Vice-President Vera Jourová and Council representatives will present their views to plenary about the Government’s increased powers, among other issues. In a resolution adopted on 17 April, Parliament warned that the indefinite prolongation of the state of emergency, the authorisation to rule by decree and the weakening of the national Parliament’s oversight are “totally incompatible with European values”.
