EU at UNGA76: bringing global solutions to regional challenges
On 22 September, President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced that the EU will double its external funding on biodiversity to support a more ambitious and effective Global Biodiversity Framework during the Leaders meeting “Transformative Action for Nature and People”. Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson, represented the EU at the virtual High-level Dialogue on Energy. During the morning, High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell participated in the meeting of Foreign Ministers of the Berlin Process on Libya. Vice-President for Democracy and Demography, Dubravka Šuica, called on global leaders to act urgently to prevent further violence against children at the virtual high-level side event on Violence against Children in times of crisis. See the full speech here. Then, Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič, announced a new EU aid package for Yemen during a High-level event on the urgent humanitarian needs in the country. See the press release here. In the afternoon, he co-hosted a high-level event on International Humanitarian Law, together with France and Germany. High Representative/Vice-President Borrell joined Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the G20 countries for a meeting on Afghanistan. In the evening, High Representative/Vice-President Borrell attended a dinner with African leaders, hosted by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel. Today, 23 September, High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell will deliver a statement on behalf of the EU during the ministerial conference on article XIV of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). He will also deliver a video message during the meeting of the Alliance for Multilateralism, organised by Germany and France. Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič, will deliver opening remarks at the high-level event on “Protection of children, invisible victims of armed conflict and COVID-19”, organised by the EU and Belgium. Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevičius, will participate at a high-level event on regional perspectives on the circular economy.
