Eurostat: € 23 billion surplus in international goods trade in the euro area, € 7.8 billion surplus for the EU28

According to Eurostat’s first estimates, exports of goods from the euro-zone (EA19) to the rest of the world stood at 203.4 billion euros in May 2019, up 7.1% from May 2018 (189.9 billion). Imports from the rest of the world totaled 180.3 billion euros, up 4.2% from May 2018 (173.0 billion). As a result, in May 2019, the euro area recorded a surplus of € 23.0 billion of its international merchandise trade with the rest of the world, compared with + € 16.9 billion in May 2018. Intra-EU trade euro area rose to EUR 172.0 billion in May 2019, an increase of 4.9% compared with May 2018. For the EU28, exports of goods outside the EU28 stood at 178, 5 billion euros in May 2019, up 10.7% from May 2018 (161.3 billion). Imports from the rest of the world amounted to 170.7 billion euros, up 6.1% from May 2018 (160.9 billion). As a result, in May 2019, the EU28 recorded a surplus of € 7.8 billion of its international goods trade with the rest of the world, compared to a surplus of € 0.4 billion in May 2018. Intra-EU trade28 amounted to € 308.1 billion in May 2019, up 3.5% compared to May 2018.
