Greece: EU coordinates assistance to relieve overcrowding of camps on islands
The Commission is working together closely with the Greek authorities to help implement an emergency response plan to address risks of a potential outbreak of coronavirus on the camps on Greek islands. In this context, Austria has offered 181 accommodation and sanitation containers via the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. The EU will co-finance the delivery costs of the specialised containers which include shower and toilet facilities. Janez Lenarčič, Commissioner for Crisis Management, said: “The Coronavirus pandemic has affected the whole of Europe, including refugees and migrants in Greece. Thanks to Austria’s offer, Greece will be better equipped to prevent the spread of the virus among the vulnerable migrants and refugees. The EU stands ready to channel further offers of assistance.” Greece activated EU Civil Protection Mechanism requesting accommodation, hygiene and medical materials, such as oxygen generators, x-ray machines and wheelchairs.
