New EU data protection rules: MEPs and MPs to debate implementation and impact
At this interparliamentary committee meeting, MEPs and national MPswill discuss how the new rules are to be enforced, with representatives of the EU institutions, law enforcement authorities, intergovernmental organizations, enterprises and IT specialists.
Discussion will focus on arrangements for implementing the General Data Protection Regulation and the Data Protection Directive for law enforcement purposes (the “Police Directive”) but will also include their likely impact on the private sector and technological innovation.

Also on Tuesday, at 13.00, the rapporteur on the General Data Protection Regulation, Jan Philipp Albrecht (Greens/EFA, DE) will hold a press conference in the Anna Politkovskaya press conference room (PHS 0A50).

Background
Both instruments were approved in April 2016. The Directive has been applicable since 6 May 2018, and the Regulation takes effect on 25 May 2018.
The new rules will strengthen the right to personal data protection and harmonize data privacy laws across the EU. The aim is to protect all EU citizens against privacy and data breaches in an increasingly data-driven world.
