Second high-level inter-parliamentary conference on migration and asylum
On Monday, national MPs and MEPs will meet to discuss the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the external dimension of asylum and migration policies.
The conference, taking place on 14 June from 10:30 to 16:00, will be opened by Parliament President David Sassoli, the Presidents of the Portuguese parliament, Eduardo Ferro Rodrigues, the Slovenian parliament, Igor Zorčič, and the German parliament, Wolfgang Schäuble. Commission Vice-President Margaritis Schinas will deliver the keynote speech.

The conference will be organised in two sessions co-chaired by national MPs and MEPs.
During the first session from 11:00 to 12:30, representatives will focus on the migration-related impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on countries of origin and transit, with the participation of Antonio Vitorino, Director General of the International Organisation for Migration, and Branko Grims, Chair of the parliamentary Committee on Interior in Slovenia.
This will be followed by a second session from 14:00 to15:30 about the external dimension of migration and asylum policies and a comprehensive EU approach to the management of migration, including tailor-made partnerships with third countries, the promotion of legal pathways for migration, as well as integration policies. The debate will be introduced by Eduardo Cabrita, Portuguese Minister of Interior, and Detlef Seif, Member of the Committee on Internal Affairs and Community of the German Bundestag. It will also include a testimony from the NGO ‘Operazione Colomba’.
During the closing ceremony from 15:30 to16:00, Presidents Ferro and Sassoli. will deliver concluding remarks.
