Statement by President Charles Michel after his meeting with Presidents Von der Leyen, Lagarde and Centeno
Today the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, invited the President of the European Commission, the President of the European Central Bank, and the President of the Eurogroup for a working session ahead of next week’s Euro Summit.
The four Presidents share their assessment of economic developments. After seven consecutive years of growth, employment is at record high levels in Europe.
This is good news, yet there are risks to the economic outlook largely due to the uncertainties in the international context. Deepening EMU and strengthening the Banking Union are essential to ensure sustainable economic growth and create more jobs. The challenge is to lift Europe’s growth potential and promote a thriving social market economy that is environmentally sustainable, competitive and innovative.
