The Commission authorises a genetically modified soybean for food and feed
Today, the Commission authorised a Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) for food and feed uses (soybean MON 87708 x MON 89788 x A5547-127). This genetically modified soybean has gone through a comprehensive authorisation procedure, including a favourable scientific assessment by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). The authorisation decision does not cover cultivation. All Member States had the right to express their view in the Standing Committee and subsequently the Appeal Committee. Given the outcome of the process, the European Commission has the legal duty to proceed with the authorisation. The authorisation is valid for 10 years, and any products produced from this genetically modified soybean will be subject to the EU’s strict labelling and traceability rules.
