The Week Ahead 06 – 12 November 2017
External borders control. An advanced system to facilitate the control of the EU’s external borders will be voted on in the Civil Liberties Committee. This update of the Schengen Information System (SIS II) should help with information sharing between national judicial and police authorities on return migration decisions. The proposals also provide for a more effective use of fingerprints and facial images and a new alert system for cases related to terrorism. (Monday)
Rule of Law in Poland. Civil Liberties Committee MEPs will continue to look into the ongoing Commission procedure to protect the rule of law in Poland in a debate with First Vice-President Frans Timmermans. (Monday)
Financing clean energy. A conference bringing together political leaders, policy makers, the investor community and other experts will debate the best ways to finance the transition from carbon to more sustainable energy sources. EP President Antonio Tajani, Commission Vice-President Jyrki Katainen, European Investment Bank President Werner Hoyer and California Governor Jerry Brown will be among several high-profile speakers.
Mr’s Tajani, Hoyer and Brown, together with Industry and Energy Committee chair Jerzy Buzek and Climate Action and Energy Commissioner Miguel Arias-Cañete, will hold a joint press conference at 10.45. (Tuesday)
Plenary preparations. Political groups will prepare for next week’s plenary debates and votes on the extension of the European Fund for strategic investment (“Juncker fund”) to further boost Europe’s economy and also on the agreement with member states on the protection against dumped and subsidised imports from third countries. MEPs will discuss the rule of law in Poland and in Malta and prepare draft resolutions. Foreign Affairs Committee MEPs will prepare for debates with Federica Mogherini on US President Trump and the Iranian Nuclear Deal, Yemen and Afghanistan. Car safety, retail financial services, enforcement of consumer protection laws are other topics which will be brought up for the upcoming plenary.
President’s agenda. EP President Antonio Tajani will meet Spanish Economic Affairs Minister Luis De Guindos, Italian Economic Affairs Minister Pier Carlo Padoan, French Economic Affairs Minister Bruno Le Maire, Commission Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis, Economic and Financial Affairs Commissioner Pierre Moscovici as well as key MEPs from Parliament’s Committee on Economic Affairs, on Monday. On Wednesday, President Tajani will meet California Governor Jerry Brown.
