He is the Australian Ambassador to the EU, Belgium, Luxembourg and NATO. Mr Brown’s public service career has spanned more than 30 years, of which a significant period has been focussed on trade policy and economic matters. For three years prior to his current appointment, he led the trade and investment group in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Canberra, a role in which he was responsible for Australia’s agenda for trade negotiations and trade policy. During this period, he was Australia’s chief negotiator in the TPP-11 negotiations (2017-18). Among his previous roles have been services lead in the Uruguay Round of GATT negotiations, head of the department’s WTO trade law unit and chief negotiator in free trade agreement negotiations. He led a major review of the Australian Government’s trade policies and programmes from 2007 to 2008. He served for a period as Australia’s chief climate change negotiator. His most recent overseas posting was as High Commissioner to Canada and he has previously served as deputy head of Australia’s mission to the EU.
