Olivia Gippner is the Assistant to the Deputy Director-General of the European Commission’s DG CLIMA (Directorate-General for Climate Action). In this position she has been providing advice to the organisation’s cross-sectoral work on the European Green Deal and the European Union’s recovery package following the coronavirus outbreak in March 2020. Her particular focus is on the engagement of citizens, businesses and local authorities through the European Climate Pact (to be launched at the end of 2020). Previously she was working in DG CLIMA’s ‘in-house think tank’. Using a variety of economic models this unit is in charge of carrying out impact assessments of EU climate and energy policies, most notably the EU vision for a 2050 greenhouse gas strategy presented on 28 November 2018. Prior to joining the European Commission and following her PhD at the Free University Berlin, she specialised in research on EU-China climate relations at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
